Up-and-coming Canadian designer Corinne Monique Long launched her Spring/Summer 2014 collection, ‘Medusozoa,’ during New York Fashion Week, closing an Emerging Designer Showcase with Rogues Gallery Presents at Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City. Select pieces from the collection were also showcased at a presentation in Lincoln Square. The designer’s eponymous fashion label Corinne Monique, is a decadent high-end ready-to-wear line with a signature style of powerful femininity, sexy confidence, and glamour. The line focuses primarily on flirtatious day-to-evening dresses and is designed from an artist’s point of view. The collection was also shown at a trunk show during New York Fashion Week, available to the industry for viewing by appointment at private showrooms hosted by our sponsoring partner Hotel Belleclaire.
Corinne Monique’s current Spring/Summer 2014 collection, entitled ‘Medusozoa,’ was inspired by the designer’s recent inaugural visit to the tropical Caribbean. The current collection continues last season’s ‘Year of the Serpent’ focus on a sense of exoticism, this time centering on the colourful and exuberant carnival celebrations or fetes of the Caribbean islands and their joie de vivre. The collection also draws inspiration from the equally exotic and beautiful sea life found in the Caribbean ocean, especially as relating to the jellyfish. Medusozoa is the scientific name for the strikingly exquisite yet fearsome and poisonous creature, alluding to the powerful and intelligent mythological character Medusa. Medusa is the embodiment of all things feminine, having qualities and symbolism similar to the serpent, and the term also means ruler or queen. Like the jellyfish, Medusa is said to have been ravishingly beautiful as well as terrifying she could turn men to stone with one glance.
Corinne says the collection “aims to use the power of female attraction to entice and tempt onlookers with clean, modern, seductive lines, reminiscent of the structured yet fluid jellyfish. The pieces feature asymmetrical hems and cutouts and showcase opulent fabrics, such as chiffon, metallic silks, and sequins in alluring hues of sea glass, hibiscus, orchid, sun-drenched gold, moonlit silver, and brilliant white.”
